Get Your Sonic Fix 10-31-04

I was hankering recently for some Sonic in a way that just playing the games would be unlikely to saite. What I decided I wanted was a Sonic Fix, ala Newtype's Gundam Fix, or more recently, Gundam by the Way. It would be a website that updates periodically with a single, really great piece of art by some talented Sonic fan, and then there'd be some kind of commentary below between the artist and the site maintainer about the image, about what it represents, what memories it calls to mind, what they're having for dinner, etc. Taking itself entirely too seriously in this manner, I think it would give a kind of "validation" for the neurotic fan, or maybe at least something to kill a few minutes. But I could hardly be bothered to do such a thing! How would I contact the artists, and how would I convice them to support the project? How could I ensure that the work was of sufficent quality?

I looked at some fanartists and I certainly saw a lot of talent, and after a lot and lot of sorting through Deviant Art sites I did find some who really impressed me, but the majority of the good ones spent all their talent drawing fancharacters.. But really, that struck me as quite possibly the most worthless form fanart could take. On one hand I can appreciate the desire of artists to create something original--indeed, there's a part of me at cringes and feels a bit silly about what I've just drawn here--but to create something "original" that is entirely dependant on some video game for its style, characters, or settings, well, it totally invalidates the originality! What was the point exactly? I just don't get it..

Well, hope I didn't offend anybody there, and of course, that's not to say that sort of person couldn't be involved in this kind of project, the purpose of it being essentially to let me wallow in nostalgia without having to create any art myself. I'm too busy to be drawing Sonic these days--what's the point of it? What do I have to gain from it? That's why I had the idea. I like the idea, but it's pretty selfish of me really, so I figured the best thing to do was just to draw it myself after all. And hey, not lookin' too bad at all if I may say so.

But I don't know if I've gotton over my desire for a Sonic Fix (and corresponding webpage) or if I've just made it worse...
